Hayden Youlley’s stunning ceramics have taken centre stage on our dining table for the last few years. The hand-made and minimalist look and feel is finished off with a refined elegance- making them a functional piece of art for any table. And now we have him making our new BBTC Signature Travel Mugs! Read on to find out more.
I was fortunate enough to meet Hayden in-person at the North Coast Mud Trail this year where he was spruiking his wares. He is a true artisan who is obviously deeply involved in his process with a beautiful energy that you can feel in each ceramic piece. Having moved to the Northern Rivers this year, I was so excited that he agreed to make our new Signature Travel Mugs. Actually, excited is an understatement- I was ecstatic!
Hayden studied Bachelor or Design at COFA which gave him the opportunity to experiment with various design disciplines and introduced him to ceramics-:
“Things really clicked for me as a designer when I found ceramics in second year because I felt like I’d found a medium that gave me the freedon to create in the moment and the ability to explore whole ideas from start to finish. The endless possibilities malleable clay offered to explore my ideas about of surface, scale and volume really sparked my interest.”

Of course, I am fussy when it comes to my teacup choices and this one is truly superb to hold and sip from. These cups have a minimal, playful aesthetic with a glazed interior and matt exterior making them easy to hold with or without their silicone band. This signature travel cup is slip cast in imperial porcelain clay which is a process that produces a very refined, slightly off-white, translucent clay. They are cast to a specific thickness that is a balance between elegance and being suitable for everyday practical use.
Did you know that it takes 39 uses before it is as energy efficient to a paper cup?
Using a ceramic travel cup for a year instead of a disposable cup can see a
36–47% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
64–85% reduction in water use
91–92% reduction in landfill.
This is another big reason to use a travel mug for your favourite tea!
Finished off with a Byron Bay Tea Company stamp of approval on the bottom – this has been a wonderful collaboration with one of the best! Check out some further details on these beauties on our online store.
Enjoy!
